Program Description
The Writing Program offers courses designed to help students become more competent and confident writers of prose. The courses offered through this program teach conceptual strategies about writing as well as applied strategies of invention, composition, revision, and editing. These courses approach writing as a way of making discoveries about ourselves and the world and of communicating these insights to others.
Together with the colleges, the Writing Program administers the writing components (C1, C2) of the campus general education requirements; administers the Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR), and provides information to students about ways to fulfill these requirements.
The Writing Program offers lower-division courses that satisfy the C1 and C2 general education (GE) requirements (Writing 1 and Writing 2, respectively); the Writing 20 series (Writing 20, 21, 23) to help meet the needs of domestic students who have not satisfied ELWR; the multilingual writing curriculum (Writing 25, 26, 27) to prepare international students for subsequent classes; instruction for undergraduates in the theory and practice of peer tutoring (Writing 169 and Writing 159); instruction for graduate students from all disciplines in the theory and practice of teaching first-year composition courses (Writing 203).
The Writing Program also offers specialized lower-division courses for ELWR-required multilingual and international students to provide additional grammar support for essays written in winter and spring writing courses (WRIT 22A), as well as support for students who have recently satisfied ELWR and are enrolled in spring sections of WRIT 2 (WRIT 22B).
The Writing Program houses the Don Rothman Endowed Award in First-Year Writing. Now in its seventh year of honoring outstanding first-year writers and of recognizing the pedagogical inspirations of their teachers, the endowment celebrates students’ academic achievements during a fall ceremony attended by friends, family, faculty, and administrators.
Courses in creative writing are offered through the Literature Department.
