Placement Exams

Fall Quarter 2018

Language placement exams are necessary for students who have not passed the prerequisite UCSC course. Students do not take a placement exam when enrolling at level 1 in a language they have never studied, EXCEPT FOR SPANISH. Students must take the placement exam to gain entry into Spanish level 1. Students who have had language instruction prior to UCSC must take the placement exam if they intend to continue study in that language.

CHINESE LANGUAGE

Sept. 26, 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m., 113  Cowell. Arrive promptly at 10:30 a.m. Written examination. Oral placement interviews will be conducted immediately after written examination.

FRENCH LANGUAGE
Continuing students: for Priority Enrollment, please schedule an appointment with Instructor Renée Cailloux via email (cailloux@ucsc.edu) for an appointment. See the Languages and Applied Linguistics website, http://language.ucsc.edu, for office hours and locations.

Sept. 26, 1:00-2:30 p.m., 131 Cowell. Orientation begins promptly at 1:00 p.m. Written examination.

GERMAN LANGUAGE

Sept. 26, 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m., 110 Humanities and Social Sciences 1. Approximately 15 minutes to complete the interview style placement examination. Written examination if necessary.

HEBREW LANGUAGE

ITALIAN LANGUAGE

JAPANESE LANGUAGE

MATH PLACEMENT

MUSIC
The Music Core Curriculum Placement Exam will be offered Tuesday, Sept. 25, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at the Music Center Recital Hall. Individual lesson auditions will be held Tuesday, Sept. 25, 1:00-4:00 p.m., in the Music Center, second floor. The department recommends that students visit its faculty page and reach out to the instructor of your instrument beforehand to introduce yourself.

PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE
No placement exam is necessary for entry into Portuguese 1A. Continuing students: for Priority Enrollment, see Portuguese instructor during office hours for placement into Portuguese 60A. See Languages and Applied Linguistics website, http://language.ucsc.edu, for office hours/location.

RUSSIAN LANGUAGE

SPANISH and SPANISH FOR HERITAGE SPEAKERS
The placement examination is an online exam and can be taken at any time. The online address for the Spanish placement exam is: https://spanishplacement.ucsc.edu. NOTE: It takes 3-4 days for your exam results to be posted—make sure you complete the placement exam a minimum of one week prior to your designated appointment time for priority enrollment.

The placement examination is optional for heritage speakers of Spanish (students who speak Spanish at home). In this case, students can place themselves in the heritage speakers sequence of courses via the placement questionnaire. Please email the director, M.
