FAQs for Students: Waitlist Error Messages

Q: What do the waitlist error messages mean and how do I resolve the error? [show]

A: If the waitlist process attempted to enroll you in a class but your enrollment failed, the Office of the Registrar will send you an email containing the error message. Error messaging does not indicate that space is being held open for you, just that an opportunity was missed. Many errors can be resolved so that you will be successfully enrolled if space opens up again in your wait-listed class. The waitlist will run again when another space becomes available in the class.

Error: Time Scheduling Conflict

A scheduling conflict exists with a currently enrolled class. To enroll, you need to resolve the time conflict by rearranging your current enrollments. If you forgot to indicate a class that you wanted to drop if you successfully enrolled on the waitlist, you may also edit your waitlist enrollment to indicate your currently enrolled class you are willing to drop to be enrolled in your waitlisted preference. To indicate which class you would like to drop, please login to MyUCSC, click on the Enrollment tile, select the Edit tab and then the correct quarter. Select your wait-listed course and in the 'if enrolled drop this class' drop down menu, choose the course you would like to drop should your waitlist number come up again.

In Fall/Winter/Spring

If the only way to solve the time conflict is by changing your wait-listed section, call the Office of the Registrar at (831) 459-4412 or email registrar@ucsc.edu. We will do this for you so that you do not lose your spot on the wait-list. When you call please reference “Waitlist Time Conflict”. Be ready to provide your student ID number and the five-digit class number of the class you are wait-listed for.

The Registrar charges a $10 Waitlist Correction Fee for assistance from our office with waitlist corrections. The fee does not apply to manual actions taken by you, and does not apply to the first correction (the fee will be automatically waived for the first call), but it will be applied for the second correction and any thereafter.

You can avoid the fee by being strategic in your enrollment:

  • Enroll in a backup class first.
  • Enroll in the wait-listed course, checking the "Waitlist if class is full" box. Indicate in the "If Enrolled Drop This Class" drop down menu which back up course you would drop if enrolled in the wait-listed course.
  • Check to make sure you do not have any time conflicts with the wait-listed course.
  • Some co-requisite labs require a two-step waitlist process. Sign up on the waitlist for the lab. Once enrolled in the lab, you will then be notified to enroll in the co-requisite class.
  • If you have any questions, please visit the Waitlist FAQs, and feel free to call or email the Office of the Registrar at (831) 459-4412 or registrar@ucsc.edu.

In Summer Session

Email summer@ucsc.edu with permission from both instructors to resolve the time conflict. You will not be charged a fee over the summer.

Error: Maximum Term or Session Unit Load Exceeded

This message indicates you enrolled on the waitlist without selecting the course you would like to drop or adjust since you are attempting to enroll in too many credits.

Students are not able to enroll in more than 19 credits until instruction begins; beginning the first day of instruction, a GPA of 3.0 or higher automatically increases your credit limit to 22.  If you are attempting to enroll in more than 19 credits before instruction starts, you may disregard this email. Remaining on the waitlist until this change in maximum enrollment does not, however, guarantee admittance from the waitlist to the course.

In Summer Session

Students are not able to enroll in more than 15 credits per session, or more than 30 for the entire summer quarter (without permission from their advisor). Email summer@ucsc.edu.

Error: Requisites Not Met

Requirements have not been met to enroll in the specified class. The enrollment transaction was not processed. Requisites may include career (Graduate or Undergraduate), class level (Frosh, Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors), major or college, co-requisite class or lab, placement exam, student milestone (Entry Level Writing Requirement), or coursework.

Please view the Schedule of Classes for more detail on the requisites for this class. If you have any questions, contact your college advisor or feel free to call or email the Office of the Registrar at (831) 459-4412 or registrar@ucsc.edu, or summer@ucsc.edu if it is a Summer Session course.

Error: Permission Number Used is Invalid

In Fall/Winter/Spring

Please check with the instructor or department. The permission number you used to enroll on the waitlist may have expired, or the class may have been changed to require instructor permission after you enrolled on the waitlist.

  • To enroll directly into a waitlisted class with a permission number, students must drop the waitlist and enroll directly into the class using permission number and Drop if Enrolled option when prompted.

  • Only open sections are available; permission numbers will never override closed, full, or waitlisted sections.

In Summer

Please email summer@ucsc.edu for a permission number (not the instructor or department).

Error: Multiple Enrollment Not Allowed for Course

This message indicates that you are already enrolled in the course that you have wait-listed. If you are enrolled in one offering of the course but prefer to be in the wait-listed offering, specify the enrolled course as the class you want to drop if the waitlist process attempts to enroll you again.

If you are already enrolled in one offering of a class and would like to waitlist for a different offering, you must set up the wait-list enrollment as a swap so that you are not dropped from the wait-listed class. For example, if you are enrolled in Physics 6L-01 and you'd rather be in Physics 6L-02, you will need to set up the enrollment so that if you get into Physics 6L-02 you will be dropped from Physics 6L-01. Otherwise, the system will drop you off of the waitlist from Physics 6L-02 and you will remain enrolled in Physics 6L-01.

You may also get this error if you are enrolled in a class in Summer but wait-listed for the same class in Fall, or enrolled in the Fall class and wait-listed for the Summer class. There is no way to adjust classes across terms, so if you need to be in the wait-listed class, you will have to drop the enrolled class. There is no guarantee that space will become available again in your wait-listed class, so carefully consider the ramifications of dropping your enrolled class before you proceed.

Error: Repeat Limit Exceeded

If you need an override to be able to repeat a course beyond these repeat limits, contact your college advisor. Do not waitlist yourself for a class if your academic adviser told you that you needed a repeat override. Undergraduates may repeat courses in which they earn a C-, D+, D, D-, F, No Pass, or W. For an undergraduate to repeat a course more than once requires approval of the student’s college.
