Federal Veterans Benefits

Please note that UCSC does not determine eligibility for veterans education benefits. Eligibility is determined by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Students must apply through the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The UCSC Veterans Benefit Services Office will assist with the forms required and will submit the electronic enrollment (VA form 22-1999) to the VA each quarter.

Payment rates for these programs are available on the GI Bill® web site. For payment questions, or to change your address or bank information, you must contact the Department of Veterans Affairs, (888) 442-4551.

Types of federal veterans benefits:

  • Chapter 33: Post 9/11 GI Bill

    • This program provides tuition and fees assistance, basic allowance for housing (BAH), books and supplies stipend, and options to transfer eligibility to the service member's family.

    • Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs office at 1-888-GIBILL-1 (1-888-442-4551) prior to completing your application to relinquish Chapter 30, 1606, or 1607, and applying for Chapter 33: Post 9/11 GI Bill.

  • Chapter 30: Montgomery GI Bill, Active Duty (MGIB)

    • This program provides up to 36 months of education benefits to eligible veterans.

    • The monthly payment will vary according to your course load.

  • Chapter 31: Vocational Rehabilitation Training Program

    • The Vocational Rehabilitation and employment program helps veterans who have service-connected disabilities to become employed and/or maintain suitable employment

    • This program may pay full registration fees, a monthly subsistence, and book allowance.

  • Chapter 35:  Survivors’ and Dependents’ Education Assistance Program

    • This program provides up to 45 months of education benefits to eligible children of certain deceased or disabled veteran. This benefit may be used for degree programs for Undergraduate and Graduate careers at UCSC.

    • The monthly payment will vary according to your course load.

  • Chapter 1606:  Montgomery GI Bill:  Selected Reserves

    • This program provides up to 36 months of education benefits to members of the Selected Reserve.

    • The monthly payment will vary according to your course load.

  • Chapter 1607:  Reserves Educational Assistance Program (REAP)

    • This program provides educational benefits to certain reservists who were activated for at least 90 days after September 11, 2001.

    • The monthly payment will vary according to your course load.
